EN 1177 - Impact Absorbing Playground Surfacing

European Standard DIN EN 1177 issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), specifies the requirements for surfacing to be used on children's playgrounds and specific requirements for areas where impact attenuation is necessary.

The table below shows basic examples of materials used as safety protective surface:

material type grain size
[mm]
layer thickness
[mm]*
maximum
fall height [cm]
turf / topsoil - 100 up to 100
bark 20 to 80 300 up to 300
wood chips 5 to 30 300 up to 300
sand 0,2 to 2 300 up to 300
gravel 2 to 8 300 up to 300
synthetic surface - - up to 400

* If loose particulate material is used, it stall be installed to a layer thickness of 200 mm more than that found by laboratory testing to be necessary to achieve the required critical fall test.

Safe playing has absolute 1. priority in Lars Laj playgrounds, therefore each individual playground Lars Laj supplies will conform with the present international standards of safety in playground equipment. Our playground system has been certified, tested and approved by TÜV in Germany according to the latest European standards DIN EN 1176-1177.
